BY GEORGE is the trading name of George Potter who designs and makes furniture, mostly to commission for individuals and corporate clients. He originally studied Fine Art Sculpture at Glasgow School of Art, which continues to inform his practice. Later he studied Furniture Making at the City of Glasgow College.
There is an emphasis on traditional materials and methods of construction. He believes that we as a society have become seduced by the notion of furniture as a disposable commodity. His work is an attempt to address this, making pieces which will become part of individuals and families stories for generations to come.
He works closely with his local sawmill, Moyne Sawmill, ensuring the provenance of the materials used.
He enjoys working collaboratively with fellow designers and makers, including printmaker Ashley Cook, upholsterer/restorer Phil McCluskey.
This collaborative approach allows him to draw on a range of specialist skills to suit an individual client's wishes.
